Sharps
In 2008, California passed a law that made it illegal to dispose of home-generated medical sharps in the trash. This law requires used sharps to be taken to an approved collection location for proper disposal.
Medical sharps
include:
-Syringes
-Lancets
-Auto injectors
-Other needle devices for injecting medication or blood tests.
In 2016, San Joaquin County worked with various retail pharmacies and businesses to expand the Sharps and Medication Waste Collection Program and increase access to collection kiosks across the County. This program was designed to prevent medical sharps
from ending up in the trash by helping to educate the public on how to safely transport their medical sharps and properly dispose of them.
There is NO COST for San Joaquin County residents to drop off medical sharps for proper disposal
at any designated collection site including the San Joaquin County's Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Please see the Sharps and Medication Brochure link below for disposal locations and how to collect and transport medical sharps for safe disposal.
PLEASE DO NOT PLACE MEDICAL SHARPS IN THE GARBAGE!
