San Joaquin District Attorney Charges Leonardo Cabral with Hate Crime in Violent Assault

STOCKTON – San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas announced today that 38-year-old Leonardo Cabral has been charged with two felony counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon under Penal Code Section 245(a)(1), each with a hate crime enhancement under Penal Code Section 422.7, as well as one misdemeanor count of Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer under Penal Code Section 148(a)(1). The charges stem from an unprovoked and violent attack targeting the victims based on their race, ethnicity, or other protected characteristics. Cabral is scheduled to be arraigned on November 20, 2024, in Department M1.

District Attorney Ron Freitas condemned the crime and issued a strong statement reflecting his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for acts of hatred.

“Let me be clear: hate crimes are not just attacks on individuals; they are attacks on entire communities,” said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “Anyone who weaponizes hate and violence to intimidate or harm others will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. San Joaquin County will never be a safe harbor for bigotry.”

If convicted, Cabral faces significant penalties under California’s hate crime statutes, which enhance sentences for crimes motivated by hatred and bias. This case exemplifies the District Attorney’s Office’s commitment to defending the rights of every person in San Joaquin County and ensuring the safety of all its residents.
