San Joaquin County Jury Finds Tracy Man Guilty of Murder

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office has announced that a jury has found 34-year-old Leopoldo Coria of Tracy guilty of second-degree murder. The jury also found the gun enhancement allegation true under Penal Code section 12022.53(d). Coria now faces 40 years to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for later this month.

The charges stem from an incident on June 23, 2023, in a residential neighborhood in Tracy. The victim, Joseph Valles, was walking down the street when Coria and a juvenile confronted him. A brief altercation ensued, during which Coria fatally shot the victim. The case was investigated by the Tracy Police Department, with Detective Lissette Ortiz serving as the lead investigator.

“Today’s verdict is a powerful reminder that we will not tolerate senseless violence in our community,” said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “The jury’s decision ensures that a dangerous individual is held accountable, and we will continue to stand firm in our commitment to seeking justice for victims like Joseph Valles.”

District Attorney Freitas extends his gratitude to the Tracy Police Department for their thorough investigation, specifically recognizing the work of Detective Ortiz. Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the Honorable Patrick Smalling, who presided over the trial, and Deputy District Attorney Kathy Murray for her diligent prosecution of the case.

Coria’s next court date is October 18, 2024, for sentencing setting.
