San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office Announces Successful Completion of Youth Leadership Academy Class of 2024

The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office is proud to announce the successful completion of the Youth Leadership Academy Class of 2024. This unique program, the only one of its kind run by a district attorney's office, was established to provide young individuals in San Joaquin County with opportunities for personal development, leadership skills, and public engagement through various presentations and activities.

The 2024 Youth Leadership Academy enrolled 37 students from 22 local area high schools. These dedicated students attended every session, where they received valuable classroom instruction from justice system professionals on topics including criminal law and procedure, career assessment tools, substance abuse, teen dating violence, and human trafficking. They were also warned of the dangers of distracted driving.

Throughout the academy, students listened to uplifting messages about the importance of mental well-being and self-care. They learned the long-term value of education and heard firsthand accounts from speakers who shared their struggles, successes, and tragedies.

In addition to classroom instruction, the students participated in real-life police de-escalation scenarios with the Stockton Police Department, toured the San Joaquin County Jail and courthouse with the Sheriff's Department, and were taught the importance of self-defense and situational awareness by our very own District Attorney Investigators. They also heard compelling accounts from the Tracy Police Department, Delta College Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol. These partnerships provide resources, expertise, and mentorship opportunities that enrich this program.

District Attorney Ron Freitas expressed his pride in the academy's success, stating, "The Youth Leadership Academy is a testament to our commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders. These young individuals have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm throughout the program. They are the future of our community, and we are honored to support their growth and development."

The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office remains dedicated to providing meaningful opportunities for youth and looks forward to continuing this impactful program in the years to come.
