San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas, in collaboration with the Tracy Police Department's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), announces Antonee Haines, 41, of Tracy, has been formally charged with PC 187 (a) -Murder in the Second Degree. Haines was apprehended at the Superior Court of California, County of San Joaquin - Manteca Branch on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
The arrest follows a comprehensive investigation into the Fentanyl overdose death of Travis Gassaway in May of 2023. Evidence suggested an overdose from a counterfeit prescription pill containing Fentanyl.
District Attorney Ron Freitas would like to express sincere appreciation to our dedicated law enforcement partners, particularly the Tracy Police Department and the Special Investigations Unit for their cooperation in apprehending Haines. Chief Millington and his team played a crucial role in this case, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in ensuring the safety of our community.
“The eradication of the fentanyl epidemic in San Joaquin County is one of this office’s top priorities. Freitas said. “I want to make it crystal clear; Fentanyl IS poison. If you deal fentanyl, knowing that it can, and oftentimes does, result in death, you CAN be prosecuted for murder in my county.”
Haines' next court appearance will be on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at 8:30 AM. No bail was set.
