Today, San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas unveiled the newly minted James P. Willett Training Room within the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office to honor and recognize former District Attorney James P. Willett.
“It is important for our office to recognize our history and celebrate the achievements of former District Attorney James P. Willet,” said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “James Willett has been a mentor, and set the standard for victim advocacy in San Joaquin County. It is my honor to dedicate the Training Room as part of his legacy.”
The ceremony was held in the James P. Willett Training Room. In attendance were current members of the office, past employees of the office, and family and friends of former District Attorney Willett. James P. Willett joined the District Attorney’s Office in 1979 as a Deputy District Attorney. He served in a myriad of roles, from Supervising Deputy District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney, until he was appointed to District Attorney in April 2005. He served as the District Attorney from 2005 until 2015. During his tenure, he instituted the first Family Crimes Unit within the District Attorney’s Office and secured support for the Family Justice Center, a victim-centric model for services and assistance for victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, and human trafficking.
