Board Proclaims 175th Anniversary Year and Chooses Commemorative Seal
January 29, 2025

Stockton, CA - The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors celebrated with members of the community today as they proclaimed 2025 as the County's 175th anniversary year, highlighting the County's rich history and pioneering spirit. Additionally, the Board chose the work of local student A. Vasquez to serve as the inspiration for a commemorative county seal for this special anniversary year.

“For 175 years, this county has been a cornerstone of California's story—beginning as a hub for agriculture, trade, and transportation, and growing into a thriving center of diversity, industry, and community,” commented Paul Canepa, Chair of the Board. “This anniversary is a testament to our shared journey, and it offers us an opportunity to honor our shared values: resilience; unity; and an unwavering commitment to progress.”

To celebrate its 175th anniversary, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors launched an art competition inviting 7th to 12th-grade students to design a commemorative County logo. The winning design will be featured in official documents and events throughout 2025. This contest echoes a 1962 competition that produced the County's current seal, designed by local high school student June Sands of Ripon. Ms. Sands participated as a judge for this year's competition, helping to preserve the legacy of her iconic seal for future generations.

As part of the art competition, students submitted statements to describe their artwork. The winner, A. Vasquez added, “The clock represents the evolution of San Joaquin County throughout time, including its festivals, agriculture, engineering, and advancements in the economy. If you look closely, the clock marks 2:09 to represent our area code. I hope this logo inspires others to recognize how far we've come, and the hope of where we are going, because time never stops.”

San Joaquin County, established in 1850, has a long history of resilience and progress. Its governance, led by the Board of Supervisors since 1855, reflects a tradition of diversity and trailblazing leadership, most recently with Vice Chair Sonny Dhaliwal becoming the first known Sikh American member. The Board invites residents to celebrate this historic milestone through community events, educational programs, and acts of service, reaffirming its dedication to good governance and a prosperous future for all.
