STOCKTON - At their meeting Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors held their Annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony. This year, Supervisor Rickman honored Escalon resident, Mr. Darrell Voortman.
Army Specialist 4 Voortman served in the United States Army from December 23, 1965 to December 22, 1967. His service took him to South Vietnam where he served with the 79th Ordnance Battalion. Following his military service, he has continued to serve his fellow veterans through his work at the Escalon American Legion Post #263. In addition to running an Ag related business, Darrell remains active in the Escalon community through his church, the Escalon Youth Center, and a number of other activities. He and his wife Eunice have three (3) children and seven (7) grandchildren.
Afterward, Supervisor Rickman stated, “We just completed a reflective and prideful long weekend of celebrating the Marine Corps' 249th Birthday on Sunday, commemorating Veterans Day on Monday, and honoring local veterans at our Tuesday Board meeting. It was a privilege to honor and recognize Escalon resident Darrell Voortman, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam and a longtime active member of the Escalon and surrounding farming communities. Mr. Voortman is a true example of service to nation and community.”
