Stockton, CA – At its meeting on Tuesday, May 21, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the proposal from Supervisor Steve Ding, Fourth District, for the use of his district funds to support local youth programs and parks throughout the north county. Additional funds will be used to support law enforcement goals and activities in the area, recognizing that public safety is one of the core functions of local government.
Funds designated for the Thornton Basketball Courts, Morada Little League, and the Lodi Community Foundation will be used to improve the current facilities to allow local youth opportunity to play and recreate in safe and up to date fields and courts. Additionally, the funds for the Lodi Community Foundation will assist in creating a new skate park for the area, which will help rehabilitate the area at Lawrence Park, previously damaged by fire.
“Activities for kids benefit everyone in the community,” commented Supervisor Steve Ding. “The children are active, which has obvious health benefits, but being part of a team creates so many learning opportunities for them. Additionally, it teaches them from an early age what it means to be part of a community. At these fields, parents, guardians and grandparents can come and cheer for their children, but they will also be able to engage with other parents and community members. The memories made at little league games or local parks last a lifetime and I am proud to support our local parks and families with this funding.”
Additional funding for the Morada Area Association for security cameras for law enforcement and funds to support the Luiz G. Alvarez Rewards for Justice Foundation, which provides awards that lead to the arrest and conviction of perpetrators of crime, were also included in the request and approved by the full Board. Both requests will assist local law enforcement in their duties to protect our local communities.
The Supervisorial District Funds were re-established by the Board of Supervisors in the 2023-2024 Adopted Budget, after adopting the Use Guidelines and Process on May 23, 2023 (R-23-90). The intent of such funds is to provide Board members with County funds to address district-specific unmet needs. Board members review the merits and needs of proposed projects and prepare recommendations for the Board’s consideration. District fund requests are approved by a simple majority vote of the Board and are subject to existing County policy and business practice.
