STOCKTON – At its Board meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors approved Supervisor Rickman’s proposal to provide $13,200 in funding to the West Side Pioneer Association of Tracy, Inc., to assist with their storage needs.
The Supervisorial District Funds were re-established by the Board of Supervisors in the 2023-2024 Adopted Budget, to afford each supervisor the opportunity to address district-specific unmet needs. Supervisorial district-funded projects are subject to existing County policy and business practice.
The West Side Pioneer Association (WSPA) is the local historical society for the Tracy area. First organized in 1921, and named for European settlers in the Tulare Township on the West Side of the San Joaquin River, the organization has become the center of efforts to document and preserve the full history of the Tracy community and surrounding area. The WSPA is a membership organization with modest annual dues. A volunteer Board of Directors voted by the membership and named at-large, run the organization’s day to day activities. They rely on membership and volunteers to continue and expand their programs. Their goals include:
- Promote an interest in and to encourage research in the rich cultural and natural heritage of Tracy and the greater Tracy area (i.e., Tulare Township on survey maps).
- Mark historical sites, to stimulate research, and to support the preservation of historic landmarks within Tulare Township.
- Assist the County of San Joaquin and the State of California in the collection and preservation of historical materials and to make these available to the public.
“The West Side Pioneer Association of Tracy plays an important role in promoting and preserving our cultural and natural heritage, marking historical sites, and ensuring historical materials are available to the public. I am pleased to secure funding to assist them with their goals,” said Robert Rickman, Fifth District Supervisor.
