Board of Supervisors
Supervisor Miguel Villapudua Elected Board Chairman and Supervisor Paul Canepa Chosen as Vice-Chairman
January 9, 2024

Stockton, CA - Supervisor Miguel Villapudua was chosen unanimously as the 2024 Chairman of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors as part of the annual reorganization meeting that happens each January.  The Chairman of the Board serves as a representative of the Board of Supervisors and San Joaquin County at events throughout the year.  Additional responsibilities include conducting all of the board meetings throughout the year and making committee assignments for the Board members on 56committees that they serve on in the County and community.

“I am honored to have the support of my colleagues as the next Chairman of the Board,” commented Chairman Villapudua. “As I enter my last year of service on the Board of Supervisors, I want to highlight the hard work of the many employees of San Joaquin County and the organizations and community groups that the County partners with to serve and improve the lives of our residents.  I represent a portion of this County that is underserved and needs assistance.  I am proud to bring a voice and a light to the communities I serve to provide needed help and a path forward through challenges and hardship.”

Chairman Villapudua represents the first supervisorial district, which includes much of the City of Stockton, as well as unincorporated County pockets within the city.  He was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2016 and took office in January of 2017.  He is serving the final year of his second term and is restricted by term limits from seeking the office again.

“In the years that I have spent on the Board of Supervisors, I have seen growth and changes in our County and our community,” continued Chairman Villapudua.  “The next year will bring unprecedented change and challenge to our County budget and organization.  This Board of Supervisors has successfully navigated challenges in the past year, and I am confident of our ability to face this coming year and to position the County to continue providing quality services for our residents.”

As part of the annual reorganization, Supervisor Paul Canepa was elected Vice-Chairman for the 2024 calendar year. Supervisor Canepa represents District Two, which includes another large portion of the City of Stockton.  Supervisor Canepa was elected to the Board in 2022 and is serving his first term as supervisor, after previously representing the community on the Stockton City Council and the Lincoln School Board.

“I look forward to serving in this new role,” commented Vice Chairman Canepa.  “In the last year, I have embraced my position as Supervisor and sought to understand the complex work that the County does on behalf of its residents.  I am excited to continue that work as Vice Chairman, supporting Chairman Villapudua and representing San Joaquin County in Sacramento and throughout the state.

In addition to the Chairman and the Vice Chairman positions chosen today, the Board also assigned committee memberships for the upcoming year. Members of the Board of Supervisors represent the County on numerous boards and committees that address issues of community interest and importance, from health and mental health to the San Joaquin Council of Governments and positions on County advocacy groups like the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) and the National Association of Counties (NACo), which represent counties in Sacramento and Washington, D.C.
