Paramedic Preceptor Authorization & Re-Authorization

Effective January 1, 2011, all paramedic preceptors in San Joaquin County must be authorized by San Joaquin County EMS Agency.

How Do I Become Authorized?

1. Complete the Paramedic Preceptor Application.
2. Letter of recommendation from ALS employer, verifying the applicant is in good standing;
3. History of having worked full-time providing patient care in San Joaquin County as an accredited paramedic for three (3) of the previous five (5) years. See EMS Policy No. 2570 for experience substitutions.
4. Paramedic licensure/accreditation in good standing;
5. Be currently employed by an approved San Joaquin County ALS emergency ambulance provider or ALS public safety provider;
6. No pending disciplinary or clinical actions against accreditation, licensure, or employment;
7. No disciplinary or clinical actions against accreditation or licensure in the past 24 months;
8. Complete interview with SJCEMSA Medical Director and receive a positive recommendation.
9. Complete the San Joaquin County EMS Agency Paramedic Preceptor Training course which includes successfully pass with a score of 80% or higher with a closed book examination of the San Joaquin County policies and procedures.
10. Preceptor authorization shall be issued for a four (4) year term and will expire the last day of the month four (4) years from when the authorization was issued.

1. Preceptor Authorization shall be invalid if a lapse in Paramedic Accreditation occurs.
2. Attend one preceptor conference each year of the authorization term. Failure to participate in preceptor conferences shall automatically revoke preceptor authorization.
3. Preceptor authorization shall automatically be suspended if an investigation which could lead to disciplinary action or clinical remediation is undertaken, for any reason, against the license or accreditation of the paramedic preceptor by the employer, the SJCEMSA, or the EMS Authority. Following the conclusion of such an investigation, the SJCEMSA may revoke or reinstate the preceptor's authorization.

Paramedic Preceptor Conferences

Conferences are offered to maintain paramedic preceptor authorization. The conferences are open to current Paramedic Preceptors and offered at no cost. Attending one conference per year is required to maintain Paramedic Preceptor Authorization. The format is round table discussion and will include the following topics: best practices, evaluation & remediation, communication, roles & responsibilities, and reportable offenses.
